2008 W.T. Vintners ‘Gorgeous’ Syrah, Destiny Ridge Vineyard, Horse Heaven Hills
(Vinified with 100% whole berries; no new oak used): Red-ruby. Dark fruits and licorice on the slightly medicinal nose, lifted by a violet note. Savory but tight and inexpressive today, with structure currently dominating flavor. Finishes with a subtle note of lavender and a slight dryness. Needs time.
2009 W.T. Vintners ‘Gorgeous’ Syrah, Destiny Ridge Vineyard, Horse Heaven Hills
(13.8% alcohol): Ripe black fruits, bitter chocolate, lavender and a tarry nuance on the nose. Sweet and lush but juicy, with ripe acidity giving shape to the seamless black fruit and floral flavors. Quite precise and fresh for 2009. Finishes with suave tannins and noteworthy length. Resembles a Saint-Joseph in weight.
